Dominic, un adolescent de seize ans, participe à un échange linguistique en Inde pour perfectionner son anglais. Son arrivée à New Delhi, puis à Bénarès est un tel choc, que le jeune s'évanouit sous la chaleur accablante, la foule mêlé aux bestiaux, la pestilence et la pauvreté des lieux. Dès son réveil dans sa famille d'accueil, le jeune est laissé à lui-même. Shamol, son partenaire indien, doit se rendre avec sa famille à l'exhumation de son grand-père paternel. Dans cet univers étranger qu'il qualifie de cauchemardesque et d'extraterrestre, l'adolescent québécois éberlué par ce choc culturel, apprendra, d'abord contre son gré puis guidé par l'amour et la pitié, à se fondre dans cette société ancienne grâce aux yeux verts d'une Intouchable qui lui dérobera son argent et de laquelle il s'éprendra, mais avec qui il assistera aux revers des conditions d'extrême pauvreté et d'abandon dont sont victimes les plus faibles: discrimination, mendicité, lèpre, gangstérisme, prostitution, etc. |
